Mystery Mail!

Look what's going in the mail...

Can you guess who it's going to?

Monarch Butterflies in LH1!

Today we were very excited to see Hannah and her mum has some chrysalises for us to look after in the hub.  Aren't we lucky!!

Can you see the gold detail on the chrysalises?

What is inside them?

What were they before they made their chrysalises?

What will they become once they hatch out?

Why are some of the chrysalises darker than others?

Here's Hannah to tell us more:

Hannah's mum left us with some instructions to help us look after them well...

We need to spray the chrysalises with a little water each day.

We wonder why that is?

We need to let the butterfly dry their wings for about 4 hours before taking them outside to fly away.

We wonder why that is?

We can't let the butterflies out in the rain.

We wonder why that is?

'Being a good friend' with Harold

What did you do today with Harold and Ben?

What did you learn about?

During discover time today some of our learners decided to put on a puppet show for you all:

"Welcome to the show of friends.  Today we did a movie about friends" - Krishna and Oscar F

Our next steps in Probability!

Today after our probability learning we reflected on what our next steps might be...

"My next step is to choose different colours and not choose all colours for the answer" - Lily R.

"To make them harder because Lily R kept getting them right" - Bella

"About closing my eyes and picking a lollypop stock" - Mikayla

"Learning about what likely and unlikely means" - Dan

"How to use other probability words like 'more likely'" - Jahvan

"To think about what I need to do with the probability words" - Mina

Harold!

We have been so enthused by Harold and what he has taught us, that we shared what we learnt during discovery.
Some of us even made Harold!

Harold the Giraffe came to visit us today!

Today Harold the Giraffe came to visit us.  Here are some of us enjoying our time with Harold, learning about being healthy and independent.

We had so much fun and can't wait to see him again tomorrow!

What did you think of our visit with Harold today?  You might like to use these sentence starters to help you talk to your mum and dad about it!

Here are our pictures and reflections from this afternoon...

Probability in maths

In maths, we've been learning about probability.  Did you enjoy watching the video Zulfi, Hunter and Josh made?  They were talking about probability words like

certain
more likely
possible
maybe
less likely
impossible
never

What do you think about these questions?

You might even like to practice your probability learning at home:

Year 1, more or less likely
Year 2, more, less and equally likely
Year 2, certain, probable, unlikely and impossible

You might even take 10 items at home (like forks and spoons) and ask mum or dad if it's more likely or less likely to have a spoon... you could even try to trick them by asking what the chances of you having a fork would be!

Break Through!

The construction and building group were really busy this morning!  Have a look at our creations!

Ayami's mat for her birdhouse.

Harrison made two birds!

David's crab.

Kyan's transformer.

Dinesan's flying racing car.

Kaichi and Oscar made a game.

Devynee and Flynn made a tow truck.

Callum's tower.

Kyle and Alvyn made a deep tower.

Aarav and Daniel made a TV.

Healthy Eating!

For Concept, Mrs. Freddy's writing group has been looking at healthy eating and what kind of food is healthy on the food pyramid.

Here is a song that we performed to help us, and to help everyone at home!

Here are the words just in case!

Eat them everyday

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream,
Throw your sweets overboard,
So they can not be seen!

Fruit, veggies, milk and cheese,
Eat them everyday,
Meat, eggs, bread and grain,
Give energy to play!

Our concept learning is about water

Mrs Elliott's writing groups are looking at water.  How would these flowers help us find out how important water is to us? Some of flowers are in water, some are not.

"We were learning about water. We don't drink sea water, it is not good for you," said Micah.
"When you run and and drink water, water makes you cool off," said Jacqueline.
"We drink water because it helps us not get thirsty,"said Emma.
"When it is hot you will get sweaty when the sun is there, you need to drink water and have sun screen," said Sachintha.

Maths time

Santiago and Nicolas are being awesome, independent learners! They are writing numbers, what numbers can you write?

Ashikka looking after her gingerbread child at home

Flynn with his cookie child at the park!

Our song for the Learning Achievement Celebration!

Here we go, LH1 - have fun practicing this at home!

Daniel H during reading time

During our reading lesson, Daniel had to draw the things he had to pack in his bag for school.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2013

Today all of Stonefields School and the other schools in our cluster went to the Sylvia Park movies and watched our Manaiakalani Film Festival movies on the Extreme Screen!

It was so much fun and we really enjoyed watching the different movies.

This was our movie on the big screen.  Can you see Mina and Charlie introduce it?  They look so little from up in the back row!

"I felt happy because it was fun and we got to use cameras and we got to go under a picnic blanket" - George

"I felt happy because it was fun because we were making the pictures" - Tanuki

"I was excited because everyone in the movie theatre got to see our video" - Riley

"I felt sad because it was a sad song but I was also proud because I made it!" - Carys

Well done to Mrs Jackson who worked with this group of learners during break through time.  We're all so proud of what you achieved.

In the Beginning...

Here is our film festival movie.  We hope you like it!

Click here to see all of the other ones.  You might like to give them some feedback sharing what you liked about their movie!

Cookie children at home!

Have you been looking after your gingerbread child at home?

Here's Zahra with hers!

Sun Smart

Today we were learning about being sun smart in writing.

We tried using the dress up s to keep us safe.

We need to wear sun glasses, hats and long sleeves.

Writing about our 'children'

Most of us remembered to bring our gingerbread children back to school today... Ashikka and Zoe even spent time last night decorating their carry cases and Flynn gave his person a healthy dinner of broccoli!

Tonight we're all going home with them and will be thinking about what we can do to help keep them safe and healthy.  Try to get some pictures of you looking after your 'children' if you can, LH1!

Keeping our 'Children' Safe!

Today we started a new concept writing focus.

Some of our learners decorated biscuits to turn them into our children... we then made carry bags and containers for them to go home in.  Over the next few days we're going to be taking our children with us and doing our best to keep them safe.  I wonder what they might get up to!

Feel free to decorate them at home and take photos of what they do after and before school - be sure to keep them safe.

Is it ok to leave your child at home by themselves?

Is it ok to leave them out in the yucky weather?

Film Festival

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Next Wednesday 13 November the whole school is going to Hoyts Sylvia Park to watch the successful videos which were entered in the Manaiakalani film festival. There will be some videos screened which were made by Stonefields learners and some videos made by children at other schools in the Manaiakalani cluster.

To get seated on time we need to be on the bus at 9am. Please ensure your child is at school at 8.30am on Wednesday 13 November so that we can make this happen. If your child arrives at school after 9am on Wednesday they will unfortunately not be able to attend the film festival.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Kind regards, Hub 1 Teachers

Collaboration

Both this week and last week we have been focusing on our vision principle of collaboration at writing time and during feed and read.

Collaboration

We watched this neat clip that demonstrates the power of collaboration.
