Brushing our teeth

We have been talking about brushing our teeth with Ginger over the last two weeks, the children have been very helpful to Gingers friend Honey Bear who needed to go visit the dentist.
They have explained to them how to brush their teeth and made posters.

Inventors in LH1!

Having read about different ways that scientists 'spy' on animals, we decided we'd like to create our own inventions to keep an eye on animals in the wild...

WALHT: Think Critically about Ideas in our Books

Some of the learners have been reading a book called Spying on Animals and have been learning to think critically about the book - that means that they question to make their own minds up about what they're reading.

Pictures like this got us thinking...

We discussed the question is it fair to spy on animals?  Here's what we thought...

Fixing up Miss Holland's writing

Today in writing our writing group gave me feedback on my writing.

We broke it into two different parts - one was about how I could fix up the writing that I had already done, and the other part was helping me with ideas on what I could add or do differently.

Here they are sharing their feedback with me about how I could improve my writing...

Then we gave each other feedback.

Here's LH1 giving each other feedback and buddy conferencing each other during writing time...

Aftermath of Origami!

This morning we came into the hub to fine many of our learners had taken up our home learning challenge!

Dinesan came in with this awesome piece of writing to encourage everyone to have a go at making origami...

Kaichi came in with a bag of origami that his Grandma in Japan had made.  What a special thing to share with us.  Here he is to tell us more:

"The origami is a beautiful origami.  The origami my grandmother made this and it is beautiful.  The black one is my favourite because it can open."

Did you spot the beautiful flowers that Mrs Elliot sent us?

Comparing settings in reading

The Turquoise reading group has been doing lot of collaborating today!  They've been making meaning of their settings, by comparing the settings from the two different books they've been reading.  They needed to first share the setting in their own book and then try to find the similarities and differences between them.

They were certainly in the pit at times but thanks to their determination and awesome thinking, they got out!

Cross Country Writing

Yesterday we brainstormed our ideas recount about cross country based on the question words that we've learnt.  Today we began writing our stories and had to check back over them to see if we included the information to answer each of the questions...

who, when, what, where why, how?

Here's Dinesan and Jacqueline to share what they've done so far...

On Friday Hub 1 and the other hubs were there at the field for cross country.  We had to run when it was time to go.  We did it on Friday.  We did it because our heart would get pumping for exercise.  I did it by getting steady.  We used some learner qualities.  We were being determined by squeezing our breath to the finish line and also we were self-aware because we kept on aiming to the finish line.  We reflected on how we did it.

By Dinesan

At school we did cross country and the other hubs did it too and when we did it it was so muddy and our teachers were enjoying their time.  Then our t-shirts and skirts got wet.  Then when we got to the hub we changed our clothes and skirt too and it was on Friday.  Who was there was us.  Why did we do it was because it makes us fit and it was fun.

Comparing weights in Maths

"It was fun and hard because we measured stuff and I didn't know which one was heavier than the other" - Kate

"It was fun and easy because we had the scales to help us" - George

It would have been tricky if we didn't have any scales" - Ayami

"If you're not sure if one is heavier than the other one in your hands, you can put it on the scales to find out which one is harder and which one is lighter" - Annabelle

"It was challenging when they are really the same weight - then I used the scales" - Rachel

Was it easy to collaborate to start with?  No

Did it get easier?  Yes!

What made it easier?  What did you do to make it work better?

  • We used the scales
  • Talking
  • Lots of thinking!
  • Reflecting - what was bigger and what would be heavier
  • We put ourselves into small groups to work together
  • We had two leaders
  • We had to be determined - "because it was hard if we didn't use the scales and then when people moved things" - Thomas
We learnt that just because something is big it isn't always heavier "because other things look small but they are heavier because they are made from different things" - Dinesan

Mass in Maths!

Mass is the same thing as weight.  We know that everything has a weight.  Some things are very heavy and some things are light.

First we wrote what we thought mass was (this was tricky!) then we ordered a lot of things (based on their names). Next we tried ordering some objects that were in front of us.  We were able to organise them into groups of 'heavy' and 'light' and used a scale to help us compare them.

"We learnt about kgs and grams (g) today (on the iPad)" - Carys and Ashlee

"It was really, really long maths today and I liked it" - Ayami

"We learnt about mass" - Kate

"Mass is about what is bigger in weight and what isn't" - Dinesan

Cultural Day in LH1

We've had such a great time today in Learning Hub One - it's been Cultural Day!

Here we are in the morning.  We were really proud of ourselves as every single learner was able to talk on the microphone to say where they come from!

We paraded through the school showing off our cultural dress and recorded what we thought of our clothes...

Would you believe that Kyan (who was dressed as a New Zealand farmer) even arranged for some lambs to come and visit us?!  Here we are with Lily and Simba.  We asked lots of really good questions at the end of their visit.  Thank you Kyan and your Mum for organising this amazing surprise!

We sketched picture of each other in our cultural dress and had to pay close attention to the details.

Then in the afternoon, some of our big buddies from Learning Hub Three came to perform some of their Kapa Haka waiatas and hakas.  We were very lucky to get a private performance!

We had a fun day today celebrating all of our different cultures!!

Learners and parents, please share your comments and thoughts either in this box below or by leaving a comment...

Reading with Expression

In reading today we chose our favourite page that had both bold words and speech marks, to show how we recognise when different characters are talking and what we do when we see bold words.

Here we are reading a page - how do you think we did?

Massive Shifts in LH1 Writing

Magot:

We've all come such a long way in our writing already in LH1!  Margot joined us this year and look at the progress she's made in just two terms.

Feb:

July:

"I feel happy because I've done better.  I've practiced more.  Now I can write well!  I am learning to use different word beginnings"

Dinesan:

"I feel good about my writing because I used different sentence beginnings.  I gave Miss Holland detail.  I made a connection about reading (compound words) and it helped me to spell the word.  Can you give me a connection sticker at the end of the day?"

Dinesan, I'll do one better, here's a connection sticker for everyone to see!

Halves and Quarters

In maths today some of us had a go at halving and quartering some simple shapes.  We also learnt what a half and a quarter look like when we write them as numbers.

Do you know what a half and a quarter look like?

Friday Morning Poetry

Each Friday we look at new poems in the hub.  Here's one of our groups practicing one of the poems, in which they focused on punctuation and expression (especially around the question marks).

Drama!

Today in the hub we did things a bit differently - instead of PE, we were treated to some drama!

Hub One Herald - the first ever copy!

Extra, extra, read all about it!

Some of the learners in LH1 have become journalists.

We're very proud to be able to bring you the first ever edition of the Hub One Herald.  We put a lot of time and effort into writing our stories and took awesome 'photographs' of our stories.

What do you think?  Would you like to see the next edition of the Hub One Herald?

Click on the newspaper to read it - once it loads, you'll be able to flick through the different articles... click again to zoom in on the ones you'd like to read.

Cows in the Garden read by Bella, Dinesan, Lily D and Ashlee

We've been busy doing lots of amazing learning here in Hub One!  One of our blue groups have been learning how to read with expression and character voices, and how to know when to use those voices.  They turned this book into a play to practice.

What do you think?
