Aftermath of Origami!

This morning we came into the hub to fine many of our learners had taken up our home learning challenge!

Dinesan came in with this awesome piece of writing to encourage everyone to have a go at making origami...

Kaichi came in with a bag of origami that his Grandma in Japan had made.  What a special thing to share with us.  Here he is to tell us more:

"The origami is a beautiful origami.  The origami my grandmother made this and it is beautiful.  The black one is my favourite because it can open."

Did you spot the beautiful flowers that Mrs Elliot sent us?

Origami Challenge

We've been learning all about different cultures in LH1 this term.  Yesterday we watched one of these videos teaching us how to make an origami cat and today we had a go at working through the steps and making these paper kitties.

Here are the videos to show you how to make a cat and dog out of origami at home and the links to print the special origami paper.

Which is your favourite?

You might even like to try some of these other origami designs with the help of someone at home...

Click here to see what else is on the website.

Before we started we talked about which Learner Qualities we thought we'd need to use... we thought we'd have to be determined and do lots of thinking and reflecting as we went.

What did you most enjoy about making the origami?

What was challenging about making them?  What did you do when it got tricky?

How would it feel...?

How would it feel to ride a roller coaster?

Carys read a book today about a girl overcoming her fear of a big roller coaster.  We thought it would be scary but she didn't think it was too bad once she went on it.

Do you think these people seem scared?

How would it feel to ride a roller coaster, I wonder?

Here's Carys on a roller coaster!

What Culture are you from?

Today in the afternoon we talked about culture.

We've included this map for you to explore with you children - we'd love it if you'd include some information on it - where was your child born?  You (as parents)?  Their grandparents?  What cultures do you associate with?

Let's learn more about each other!

How to leave a pin (with information):

Now that you know how to leave a pin, click here to get to the editable version of the map and add your family's pins (and type the password 'holhay85' to save at the end)

Remember to hit save and type in the password!

What would your box be?

Today we read a book about boxes called 'Not a Box' by Antoinette Portis.  The rabbit used his imagination to turn his box into all sorts of amazing things!!

What would your box be?

Can you write a comment?  Good luck Hub One!

Home Learning with Playdough

"These are my playdough rhyming words.  I made the playdough in cooking (at home) and then I made two animals and lots of words.  They are all robot words"  By Ashikka

If you'd like to make playdough at home, check out the learning that the ALL group did with Miss Hinge here!

Henry's Home Learning in Phonics

In phonics some of the learners have been looking at words with the same endings and we noticed that they often rhyme.

Here's Henry with some home learning he chose to do...

Can you think of some words that rhyme with 'dot' here?

Home Learning Challenge: Science

This term in science we are learning about different surfaces.  We've been describing how things feel here at school and have been wondering about things at home too.

Here we are finding different surfaces at school:

Could you help me to find some interesting things at home that are smooth and rough, soft and hard and maybe even stretchy?

Optional Home Learning Challenge.

This week in maths we have been learning about 2 D and 3 D shapes. We have built our knowledge of different shapes by learning their names and their properties. We are now making meaning by thinking and connecting what we know to sort, group and order the shapes.

When you go home can you ask for a selection of boxes tins etc from the kitchen cupboard and sort and group them, remember to explain how you have done this. Have fun.

Alphabet Search

Emily's been busy making good use of her spare time... she's been building her capacity in literacy!

Would you like to try the same activity at home? Write down all of the letters in the alphabet and see what words you can come up with that start with those letters. Good luck!

Home Learning Challenge: Finger Print Pictures and Squishy Bags

My travels on the internet took me to this fabulous blog...

This site has lots of neat ideas and things that you can do at home with your child (though many of them will need to be adapted to suit each individuals needs - the blog is aimed at learners who are a little older than the majority of ours).

This week we have two Home Learning Challenges.  The first of which is to make finger print pictures... by creating creatures, people and things with our finger prints and a pen, you'll be able to springboard into some neat oral language and/or writing with your child.

The second challenge has come through

Mama's Style

Her post gives instructions to allow you to make your own 'squishy bag' out of hair gel, food colouring and glitter... what a fun way for your child to practice their alphabet!

We'd love to see your creations - have fun!

Home Learning Challenge

Your challenge for this week (and it might take longer than that), is to be able to spell and write your first and last name.  If you're able to do both of those things, you might even try writing your middle name if you have one!

You can ask someone at home to help, as they'll be experts at writing their names.

Why do you think it is important that we know and can write our names?

Home Learning Challenge... Baking!

What an amazing response we've had to the home learning challenge - well done to those of you who have already joined your family in the kitchen.

Remember if you've taken photos to email them to sarahh@stonefields.school.nz and I'll load them onto the slideshow below for you!

Isabelle even got busy with her family, making a presentation for you all!

Real Life Learning in Action!

You can't hold a Stonefields learner back!

Check out Charlie and Oliver in their kitchens baking up a storm.  They must have ran home and gotten their noses straight into their recipe books.  Well done, boys, you've really shown everyone that learning doesn't just happen between 9 and 3 at school.

How did they taste?  What was the best part about this home learning challenge?  What was tricky?

We can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!

Enjoy our photos and be sure to check back as more Hub 1 learners get in on the action...

Nathan's made a delicious fudge slice and has even shared the recipe with you all...

Hands on Home Learning: Let's get baking!

Welcome back to another exciting week of learning in Hub One!  We hope you had a restful and enjoyable weekend with your families.

This week, we're challenging the learners to get into the kitchen to help with come baking or cooking - if you manage to take part in this Hands on Home Learning Challenge, please send a photo along to sarahh@stonefields.school.nz and I'll be sure to load it up on here!

Baking and cooking can be a great way to get your kids learning in an authentic and fun way.  It opens up discussion about healthy eating and gets the kids reading and measuring (which is a part of maths)... not to mention the possibilities that arise around oral language and written language (they may like to comment on this post, with your help, sharing their experience with us).

It can be as big or small as you like... and if you're stuck for ideas, this is my favourite chocolate cupcake recipe - yum!

Ingredients:
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (use baking cocoa, not drinking cocoa)
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees C. Line a muffin pan with paper or foil liners. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk; beat well. Fill the muffin cups 3/4 full.
  3. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
Makes 18 cupcakes (using Wilton cupcake papers) with flat tops
