Ashlee and Riley have been particularly determined. They were both stretched in their maths learning and had to show determination to keep on going. They used self-talk to remind themselves to keep going and not to give up!

Determination and Reflection in Maths

Comparing settings in reading
The Turquoise reading group has been doing lot of collaborating today! They've been making meaning of their settings, by comparing the settings from the two different books they've been reading. They needed to first share the setting in their own book and then try to find the similarities and differences between them.
They were certainly in the pit at times but thanks to their determination and awesome thinking, they got out!

Music and Songs Break Through groups
We had so much fun collaborating, sharing ideas and talking about what we could do for our projects.
We played with the instruments and then decided what we were going to use for our songs. Our voice is an instrument too!
We gave each other feedback so that we have next steps to improve our performances. We had a fantastic day!

Mass in Maths!
Mass is the same thing as weight. We know that everything has a weight. Some things are very heavy and some things are light.
First we wrote what we thought mass was (this was tricky!) then we ordered a lot of things (based on their names). Next we tried ordering some objects that were in front of us. We were able to organise them into groups of 'heavy' and 'light' and used a scale to help us compare them.
"It was really, really long maths today and I liked it" - Ayami
"We learnt about mass" - Kate
"Mass is about what is bigger in weight and what isn't" - Dinesan

Reading with Expression
In reading today we chose our favourite page that had both bold words and speech marks, to show how we recognise when different characters are talking and what we do when we see bold words.
Here we are reading a page - how do you think we did?

Strand Maths in Hub 1
"I did repeating patterns and there were one green, two orange, three of another colour…" - Kush
"We made our pattern with coins and money and it was really big. We went gold, silver and brown" - Bella and Eugene
"My colours were red and yellow" - Alexi
"I was doing patterns with the magnets and it was hard. I was determined and I made the pattern" - Henry
"I made colors with purple, pink and other colours and then I went purple and yellow and I could connect them together. I almost made it long!" - Ashlee
"I made a really tall pattern. I had to be determined because it was so tall it kept on falling down. The colours were red, green, green, yellow, blue, blue, and it kept on repeating." - Bella

Halves and Quarters
In maths today some of us had a go at halving and quartering some simple shapes. We also learnt what a half and a quarter look like when we write them as numbers.
Do you know what a half and a quarter look like?

Science: Melting and Setting
We learnt that heating and cooling both chocolate and fat is a reversible change, because they can go from being normal, to runny and back to hard again over and over and still go back to being like they were when they started.
Here we are showing the changes between liquid and solid...

Friday Morning Poetry
Each Friday we look at new poems in the hub. Here's one of our groups practicing one of the poems, in which they focused on punctuation and expression (especially around the question marks).

Cows in the Garden read by Bella, Dinesan, Lily D and Ashlee
We've been busy doing lots of amazing learning here in Hub One! One of our blue groups have been learning how to read with expression and character voices, and how to know when to use those voices. They turned this book into a play to practice.
What do you think?

Ashlee at the Beach!
Today in reading time, Ashlee chose to write a book!
She wrote a fabulous story about her time at a beach in Wellington. It sounds like she really enjoyed her visit there.
What learning do you like to do in your own time?

Using the writing progressions
Kush: I was doing evidence and highlighting the words that I sounded out
Bella: When you say you can do something to someone you have to show them the evidence that you can do it!
Eugene: I was highlighting the words. It helped me to think about writing
Ashlee: I was highlighting words in my book so that I know which words I highlighted
We talked about the importance of using evidence in our learning and so we made a video to make sure we could show it to anyone who asks!
