Tech Group Videos: Now Showing!

In the afternoons some of our students have been learning how to do a range of different things to eventually put together a movie.

They learnt how to:

Operate a camera and take clear photos
Find music on YouTube
Write and perform their own original song
Write a script to go along with their movie and
Combine everything together in iMovie (either on an iPad or computer)

Aren't they amazing learners and collaborators!!

Hats for term 4!

This term we all need to be wearing school hats as it is the summer term just like term 1. We find it useful if there is something attached to our hats so that we can identify our own one really easily.

These group of children are fine demonstrators!

Thank you to our volunteers :-) We like how you have put a ribbon or a button or badges on your school hats. Round of applause for all of you in hub 1!

From next week if you don't bring your hat to school, unfortunately you will have to sit in the shade during break times so please remember to bring them!

Fixing up Miss Holland's writing

Today in writing our writing group gave me feedback on my writing.

We broke it into two different parts - one was about how I could fix up the writing that I had already done, and the other part was helping me with ideas on what I could add or do differently.

Here they are sharing their feedback with me about how I could improve my writing...

Then we gave each other feedback.

Here's LH1 giving each other feedback and buddy conferencing each other during writing time...

Music and Songs Break Through groups

We had so much fun collaborating, sharing ideas and talking about what we could do for our projects.

We played with the instruments and then decided what we were going to use for our songs. Our voice is an instrument too!

We gave each other feedback so that we have next steps to improve our performances. We had a fantastic day!

Comparing weights in Maths

"It was fun and hard because we measured stuff and I didn't know which one was heavier than the other" - Kate

"It was fun and easy because we had the scales to help us" - George

It would have been tricky if we didn't have any scales" - Ayami

"If you're not sure if one is heavier than the other one in your hands, you can put it on the scales to find out which one is harder and which one is lighter" - Annabelle

"It was challenging when they are really the same weight - then I used the scales" - Rachel

Was it easy to collaborate to start with?  No

Did it get easier?  Yes!

What made it easier?  What did you do to make it work better?

  • We used the scales
  • Talking
  • Lots of thinking!
  • Reflecting - what was bigger and what would be heavier
  • We put ourselves into small groups to work together
  • We had two leaders
  • We had to be determined - "because it was hard if we didn't use the scales and then when people moved things" - Thomas
We learnt that just because something is big it isn't always heavier "because other things look small but they are heavier because they are made from different things" - Dinesan

Mass in Maths!

Mass is the same thing as weight.  We know that everything has a weight.  Some things are very heavy and some things are light.

First we wrote what we thought mass was (this was tricky!) then we ordered a lot of things (based on their names). Next we tried ordering some objects that were in front of us.  We were able to organise them into groups of 'heavy' and 'light' and used a scale to help us compare them.

"We learnt about kgs and grams (g) today (on the iPad)" - Carys and Ashlee

"It was really, really long maths today and I liked it" - Ayami

"We learnt about mass" - Kate

"Mass is about what is bigger in weight and what isn't" - Dinesan

Netball today

Today we have some special visitors come in to teach us all netball.  We learnt some new skills and practiced them.  Here are some learners sharing their thoughts.  Click the play button and please be patient, the photos will turn over (they're just a little slow) for you to hear everyone's ideas.

Halves and Quarters

In maths today some of us had a go at halving and quartering some simple shapes.  We also learnt what a half and a quarter look like when we write them as numbers.

Do you know what a half and a quarter look like?

My Awesome Writing by Kate

Yesterday I wrote a whole word in my writing.  I wrote about a sign and I used the words from the book.  I have been learning to write the first sounds in words.

I feel happy because I liked how I wrote it and I was determined.

Hub One Herald - the first ever copy!

Extra, extra, read all about it!

Some of the learners in LH1 have become journalists.

We're very proud to be able to bring you the first ever edition of the Hub One Herald.  We put a lot of time and effort into writing our stories and took awesome 'photographs' of our stories.

What do you think?  Would you like to see the next edition of the Hub One Herald?

Click on the newspaper to read it - once it loads, you'll be able to flick through the different articles... click again to zoom in on the ones you'd like to read.

Hub One are Journalists!

In writing some of our learners have been writing newspaper articles about the things they're good at (like being a good writer, an artist or being a caring friend).  They've all been really focused on their writing... today I caught up with Charlie and he managed to spell an entire line correctly!  He used his knowledge of sounds and his memory to get them all right - Go Charlie!

Haoun and Kate have been showing amazing determination in writing.  They're learning to have a go at writing words using the sounds they know.  We know that it's fine if we don't know how to spell a word because it means we'll be able to learn it together!

Real Life Learning in Action!

You can't hold a Stonefields learner back!

Check out Charlie and Oliver in their kitchens baking up a storm.  They must have ran home and gotten their noses straight into their recipe books.  Well done, boys, you've really shown everyone that learning doesn't just happen between 9 and 3 at school.

How did they taste?  What was the best part about this home learning challenge?  What was tricky?

We can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!

Enjoy our photos and be sure to check back as more Hub 1 learners get in on the action...
